Our Atlanta car accident lawyers read about a tragic case where two Alabamans were killed in a high speed crash in Georgia.
At about 5 a.m. on Sunday, March 2nd, a white car, a 2013 Nissan Maxima, was travelling eastbound on Stone Mountain Highway near Mountain Industrial Boulevard in DeKalb County. In the car were two 25 year olds, Elise Word from Birmingham and Denerra Patterson from Docena, Alabama. Ms. Word was driving, according to DeKalb police Captain Stephen Fore. The pair’s car flipped several times, hit a guardrail, and crashed into an SUV, ending up on the westbound side of the road. Captain Fore said, “She came upon another vehicle. She clipped the back end of the vehicle and that caused her to lose control.” Ms. Word was thrown from the car. Both she and Mr. Patterson died in the car crash. Ms. Word died at the scene, while Mr. Patterson, who was partly ejected from the car, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where he died of his injuries.
No one in the SUV was injured. Another DeKalb officer, Lieutenant Charles Barkett, told reporters that speed may have been a factor in the crash. The accident shut down the eastbound lanes of Stone Mountain Highway and two westbound lanes for nearly four hours. Police in DeKalb are still trying to determine how fast Ms. Word was driving at the time of the accident and where the two were going at the time. It is clear to the police, however, that neither Ms. Word nor Mr. Patterson were wearing seatbelts.
Friends and family in Alabama expressed shock at the two deaths. Farron Carson, a cousin of Mr. Patterson, said he felt, “Shock, disbelief. I had just talked to him the night before.” She said they were going on a trip to Atlanta, and that she was supposed to be with them that weekend. She told reports, “This particular weekend I told him I was tired. And I said ‘Okay, be careful.’ That’s last time I heard from him. It’s really hard to cope with right now. A lot of people are still in disbelief.” A cousin of Ms. Word echoed those sentiments. Ashley Lumpkin said, “It was a shock and it just hurts so bad, but I know she’s in a better place. Just knowing I can’t pick up the phone and call her anymore.”
