Drive Shaft Kills Woman in Georgia

Vehicle accidents happen in many different ways, and they are all disruptive no matter how small, but when a serious accident occurs, especially those that involve the unnecessary and tragic death of a loved one, it can change people’s lives in an instant.  Our Atlanta car accident attorneys saw a news story about one such unfortunate accident recently, involving a broken drive-shaft and the tragic death of an elderly Georgia woman.

Anne Hudson and her husband, Leroy, both 77 years old and from Cherokee County, were driving on 1-24 in LaVergne in the end of September.  At about 10:30am, Leroy was driving their 2008 Chevrolet Equinox and Anne was in the front passenger seat and they were headed eastbound and were near the Rock Springs Road overpass just east of the Sam Ridley Parkway in Smyrna.  In a truly horrible instance of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, the car in front of them- a 2008 Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by a man from Lebanon- was having problems and the drive-shaft came off the truck and went flying.  The drive-shaft is a rotating object located between the differentials and gear box and it helps the vehicle shift into drive from the idle position.  The drive-shaft can weigh between 40 and 90 pounds and can thus cause considerable damage.

The Dodge Ram’s broken off drive-shaft then hit a 2002 Saturn on the tire before it smashed through the windshield of the Hudson’s car, hitting Anne Hudson.  Mrs. Hudson was LifeFlight helicoptered to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she later died of her injuries.  Leroy Hudson survived and was not injured in the accident.  People from the Dodge and the Saturn were not injured either.  The driver of the Dodge Ram is only facing a citation of driving without insurance at the moment.  No criminal charges are expected in this case, and state troopers called it an “unfortunate accident”.  A mechanic interviewed by a reporter said there were no safety mechanisms to keep broken drive shafts from falling off vehicles, although the driver maybe heard a popping or clicking sound, felt vibrations, or had problems turning the vehicle.
